Step 1: Gather Ingredients and Supplies
Before you get started, make sure you have all the ingredients and supplies you need to make a delicious upside down turkey. You’ll need a roasting pan, cooking oil, salt and pepper, butter, garlic, parsley, thyme, and of course, a turkey. You’ll also need some kitchen string and aluminum foil.
Step 2: Preheat the Oven
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Don’t forget to put the roasting pan in the oven to preheat as well. This will help the turkey cook more evenly.
Step 3: Prep the Turkey
Before you put the turkey in the oven, you need to prep it. First, rub the outside of the turkey with cooking oil. Then season it with salt and pepper. Next, stuff the cavity of the turkey with butter, garlic, parsley, and thyme. Finally, tie the legs of the turkey with kitchen string.
Step 4: Cook the Turkey Upside Down
Now it’s time to put the turkey in the oven. Carefully lower it into the roasting pan, breast-side down. Then cover the turkey with aluminum foil to prevent it from drying out. Put the roasting pan back in the oven and bake the turkey for 1 hour and 15 minutes.
Step 5: Flip the Turkey
After 1 hour and 15 minutes, carefully remove the roasting pan from the oven and carefully flip the turkey over. Make sure you have a pair of heat-resistant gloves and a sturdy pair of tongs, as the turkey will be hot. Put the roasting pan back in the oven and bake for an additional 45 minutes.
Step 6: Baste the Turkey
After 45 minutes, remove the roasting pan from the oven and baste the turkey with the juices from the bottom of the pan. This will help keep the turkey moist and flavorful. Put the roasting pan back in the oven and bake for an additional 45 minutes.
Step 7: Check the Temperature
After 45 minutes, use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of the turkey. It should be 165°F (74°C). If it’s not there yet, put the roasting pan back in the oven and continue cooking until it reaches the correct temperature.
Step 8: Let the Turkey Rest
Once the turkey has reached the correct temperature, remove it from the oven and let it rest for 15 minutes. This will allow the juices to settle and make for a juicy, flavorful turkey. Now that your turkey is cooked to perfection, it’s time to enjoy the feast! Serve your turkey with all your favorite sides and toppings and enjoy the deliciousness of an upside-down cooked turkey. As the song goes, it’s “the best way to cook a turkey, upside down UK style!”
